Russia and rogue states.

Why Russia takes a dog in the manger approach to Iran, Iraq, and Syria is a mystery to the Colonel. Ms. Latynina, a gifted commentator, questions the utility of this approach:
We wonder why we've lost the respect of other countries. Who could respect a country that doesn't even retaliate when North Korea illegally detains its citizens? Russia has systematically sided with rogue states, even when they are implicated in the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister. Even when they commit crimes against Russia. And for all our efforts, we haven't even earned the respect of the rogue states themselves.

It seems that President Putin has decided to take the French approach to appeasing terrorists and nations that create them.

Hmmm, it didn't work out too well for France.

That's a good point, Christi. Given Russian's own considerable oil resources it's hard to 'splain its courting of the lower phyla in the Middle East.

The Colonel would prefer that the US support the Russians more than we do in their struggle in Chechnya. Nonetheless, I can't see our lack of support as reason enough to play tit for tat in the ME. Our courting of some of the states formerly part of the USSR may be more substantial grounds for Russian alarm.

I think the US is missing out on an opportunity to forge an alliance with the Russians to neutralize Chinese meddling in Iran and otherwise counter its attempts to win support in the ME. Surely the Russians would welcome any signs from us that we would be willing to defend against any Chinese incursions into eastern Russia and Central Asia. It's a serious development to see the Russians conducting joint military exercises with the Chinese and otherwise appearing to be forging some kind of an alliance.

It's all a bit of a mystery to me but mine is surface knowledge at best. This must be stated.
