Mr. West's post has some interesting points about whether Islam is compatible with Western liberal society. The extensive comments are very interesting as well for the various viewpoints expressed by Australians about what the beach riots are all about.

Col, I think it depends on which followers of Islam you look at. There are Muslims that come to America because they want to be Americans. I don’t have a problem with that. I think we run into problems because of all of the multiculturalism idiots that want to have a million cultures crammed into the same house – isn’t that what destroyed the tower of Babel?
And then to top it off, we’re constantly catering to the PC police. I have no problem with anyone coming to this country but I do have a problem when some want to erase our traditions so that we do not offend them.
It seems like it would be wiser to pick a country you want to live in because you admire their way of life, not because you think you can get them to change it or, even worse, expect them to change it.
Christi, I'm disturbed by what Islam commands and the fact that we have have supposedly practicing Moslems who are in the country. Mohammed commands Muslims to fight infidels. Hindus are not ordered by their faith to fight Christians but Muslims are. I have not yet determined if the concept of najis is embraced by all flavors and all believers in Islam. No less a person than the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Iraq maintains on his web site (under Islamic laws-->Najis things) that infidels are najis, or filth, right down there with excrement, pigs, and dead bodies.
If eminent men such as this are putting out drivel like this I will take them at their word. I don't hear of ANY of the wannabe American Muslims breaking sweat to distance themselves from this kind of thinking. Ergo, I'm thinking, this is what they believe.
I agree 100% on the PC and mulitculturalism issues and especially on your point about choosing a country to live in. Wouldbe immigrants should not want to go to a country because they hope to drag it down to the level of their country of origin -- which country they are desperately wanting to see in their rear view mirror.
