Thank heaven most Muslims don’t know too much of their own history and teachings, and it is best to keep it that way. Unfamiliarity and lack of dedication to the Torah and Bible prevents good Jews and Christians from becoming better men and women, but unfamiliarity and lack of dedication to the Qur’an prevents good Muslims from becoming terrorists.Islamic Culpability in Islam Undressed (2005). The sooner the West comes to that same understanding the better equiped the West will be to deal with Muslim fanaticism.
Quite so. I think, too, that it's confusing to try to separate moderate Islam and Jihadi Islam. As my earlier post on "Humane and decent Muslims? makes clear, the only way a "Muslim" can have normal affections that can encompass non Muslims who are worthy of respect or who are loveable is really to reject the poisonous aspects of the "True" Islam. In fact, Jihadi Islam is just simply Islam, in its essence. The least fidelity to its basic teachings seems to lead inexorably to this mad world cult of death and violence. One cannot be a "moderate" Muslim and be a Muslim. The two states of mind are incompatible.
We may have to back track on this point as we learn more about the existence, or not, of contending schools of interpretation within Islamic jurisprudence. For now, we're going with the symbolism of the Hezbollah leader, an imam, standing in the street holding an automatic weapon over his head.
THAT is an autoritative interpreter of Islam. THAT is Islam.
