This is not our focus, however, but rather the implicit assumptions of the reporter about a man who “fitted in very well with the international crowd of people on the banks of the River Dochart” and “was just another one of the group [of French, Chilean, English, Spanish friends], which included psychiatric workers, social workers, part-time university lecturers, artists and musicians”:
It is ironic that Mola liked to portray himself to others as a radical, a communist, and yet at root he showed a fundamental lack of humanity and concern for his fellow human beings. This always slays me, the mooncalf attitude that if someone is a communist or radical it would be “ironic” if he or she “showed a fundamental lack of humanity and concern for his fellow human beings.”
I still find it hard to believe - not that a person I knew was infected with HIV. I have known a number of people with it, including a couple who have now passed away.
What is hard to believe is that a person could know they were infected and yet still seek out casual, almost aimless sexual relationships. Far from being the humane, intelligent, cultured person he liked to portray himself as, it shows that Giovanni Mola was some kind of psychopath.
Communist, leftists (e.g., fascists), and other political radicals were the superhemi, turbocharged, chromed, stroked engine of murder, torture, theft, destruction, and human debasement in the last century but an educated woman writing for a major Scottish newspaper in 2007 can still make the casual assumption that someone who proclaims himself to be a communist is humane and is concerned for his fellows.
What is it about liberal intellectuals that they lap up "devotion to totalitarianism" = "niceness"?
If someone of the Colonel’s acquaintance were to announce that he or she is a commie or radical you can be sure that the first thing that would come to his mind would NOT be that the person is humane, intelligent, or cultured. Confused, demented, moronic, or psychopathic are more like it.
Membership in the Dimwitted Liberal Fraternity has only one qualification -- you must want nice things to happen in the world. But proclaim this and you are free to ignore all considerations of consequences, means, and history.

UPDATE 2/11/07:
Check out Dr. Sanity on this:
This is the essence of the "dilemma of the utopians". They see themselves as so pure and righteous; so correct and virtuous; how is it possible that their beautiful utopian dreams always turn into such horrible human nightmares? And:
You can then count on the true leftist believer to close his eyes not only to his own internal reality, but also to the external reality that proves the uselessness of his beliefs in the real world. Few on the left have ever acknowledged the nightmare of the Soviet gulag; or Lenin's purges; or China's crackdowns. Few have ever even accepted the incredible human cost their ideologies have taken on humanity; the death the suffering and misery. Even today, they actively support all the future Stalin's (like the thug Chavez) in their grabs for unparalleled power."Utopian Dreams and Nightmares." Dr. Sanity, 2/8/07.

Hi Col. B. Bunny,
I really agree with you there was a lot of degradation since the Democrats started going further and further left, now they aren't even Patriots for America much less for their fellow human beings. It's like they are living in a fantasy world or something like that, with no consequences or no blame and anything goes. I'm with you I can't figure it out either.
It's puzzle, Phil. Dr. Sanity has a pretty good take on it. Something deeply psychological at work, I suspect. Something that trumps reason. I mean, anyone who's ever ventured 10 feet out of this country (excluding Canada and a few other places) has to immediately conclude that home is a vastly superior place to be with untold reserves of decency and rationality. You'd think that the fundamental orderliness and sanity of this country would be the bedrock idea that would inform and limit political discourse. Yet there are too many who start from the proposition that our society is corrupt, racist, and oppressive.
Not healthy.
