Singapore "religious teacher's" incest and rape.

Now we know as well as the next man that one swallow doesn't make a summer. That said, we also believe, nonetheless, that you can STILL learn a lot about Triassic gnats from studying one that has been preserved in amber.

While we've never engaged in gnatology in any of its forms, we do claim a modest expertise in imamology. We've commented, if memory serves us, on imams who issued hip pocket decrees for the death of some poor soul half way around the world, failed to issue decrees against local hot heads given over to the beheading of teenage Christian girls, and just generally didn't have much of a sense of humor ("There is no fun in Islam . . . "). If we didn't point any of this out, well, we should have or will.

But . . . to the matter at hand, viz., one nasty piece of imamhood in Singapore:

• He was a Muslim "religious teacher" and a businessman.
• His imamical credentials were apparently in tip top good order.
• He had three wives (polygamy) and "scores" of children.
• He had sex with his underage daughters over an 18-month period (repeated rape, incest), two of whom became pregnant and underwent abortions.
• His wives aided and abetted him in this (aiding and abetting rape and incest; gross violation of parental duties), or he "manipulated" them to help him (assault?).
• He "told his multiple wives and scores of children that according to the Quran, a father 'owned' his children and this extended to having sex with his daughters." (Personal insanity or careful scholar of Islam we cannot say.)

To the credit of Singaporeans the father is "serving a 32-year jail sentence with 24 strokes of the cane . . . ."

Having noted that, we tend to the conclusion . . . ok, ok, we conclude from this an all kinds of other evidence that there is something terribly, terribly wrong with this religion. This monster held himself out as a religious authority and committed horrible crimes against his family and thought they were all but ordained by Allah.

Maybe the fact that there is undoubtedly a lot of sick behavior behind closed doors, say, along the Utah-Arizona border undercuts our conclusions concerning the imam's mainstream as opposed to exceptional behavior. We further note, however, that the communities along said border are isolated and small and decidedly at odds with long-time mainstream Mormon thinking.

Still, just 'cause someone is personally a creepy crawly kind of guy doesn't mean that society knows this or condones it.

However, if even if we do airbrush out the miscreant's finding Koranical support for his father-daughter sex as merely idiosyncratic thinking, we are still left with the bedrock In-the-Koran-"no-problem-AT-ALL" belief system of Islam that countenances polygamy. Islam just simply considers that a notarized, gold-plated, divine revelation from Allah his own self. Thus, demonstrating that Islam and western values are hugely at odds.

If you have any doubt at all as to the corrosive and stupid-making consequences of polygamy, you have only to read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer to see what happened to an ordinary mainstream Mormon guy who tragically thought himself out-argued on the issue of polygamy and decided it was for him. The consequences for him were tragic, to say the least. It is crystal clear that once the infection of this base concept of how a man is to relate with women took root in his brain, it was followed by pathology after pathology after pathology.

Islam and its concepts deserve the strictest of scrutiny and the most vigorous and aggressive defensive measures. At the least, any Muslim in the U.S. who advocates or practices polygamy should be chained to the nose wheel of the nearest east-headed Egyptian, Saudi, Malaysian, or Indonesian airliner and sent back to live with his like-minded homies.

Maybe it's too much of a stretch to say that the Koran sanctions incest (though we remain open to this possibility, given the multitude of other execrable doctrines that reside in it). E.g., if marrying a six-year-old is cool, sex with the child is simply then a matter of when she is physically capable of engaging in it.

But then there's polygamy . . . . Where there is THAT, however, we should not be the least surprised by this perverted behavior. Once you open the door to polygamy -- and myriad other forms of real male subjugation of women -- you help to ensure a second-rate society.

On the tragic story of the 8 kids killed in the Bronx house fire. They were African muslims. The dad had two wives and at least 11 children in the house. He was away in Africa. NYT keeps saying "extended family.." .
