The last semi-Christian priest-type person we remember holding a position of political power anywhere in the U.S. was Rev. Robert Drinan, a Jesuit priest elected to Congress in the 60s. He served until a "a worldwide directive from Pope John Paul II [barred] priests from holding public office." The historic drive for theocracy was now strictly up to the Protestants.
But . . . basically, that's it as far as it went regarding actual office holders.
If someone's compiled a list of pastors, priests, bishops, cardinals, and flockmeisters who are mayors, county commissioners, judges, etc., we love to look at it. We'll hazard a guess, though, that there's no such list and the serious money will go with Dr. Sanity.
The unhinged left sees a danger of Christian theocracy when Christians simply organize politically and vote their interests. The nerve of those people exercising their rights!
The left sees Christian theocracy in order to ignore an Islamic theocracy[2] of proven malevolence. The implications of recognizing this danger are too intolerable to accept. To do so would require the abandonment of decades of a la la
But . . . could we have knocked down a straw man? What about underground efforts to institute a Christian theocracy? Secret organizing and direct action cells daily slithering away from Liberty University to infiltrate the Heartland?
Maybe it is a time for vigilance.
