Everything you wanted to know about immigration.

And I do mean everything:
Those who don’t want to uphold national borders are actually tearing down the very foundations of our democratic system, which is based on nation states. The fight for national sovereignty is thus the fight for democracy itself, since nobody has so far made any convincing model of a supranational democracy.

We now have a political class who . . . no longer feel as attached to the people they are supposed to represent as they did in the past. . . . We need to remind our political leaders that we pay national taxes because they are supposed to uphold our national borders. If they can’t do so, the social contract is breached, and we should no longer be required to pay our taxes. National taxes, national borders could become a new rallying cry.

The West is declining as a percentage of world population, and in danger of being overwhelmed by immigration from poorer countries with booming populations. . . . The West must first of all save itself. We have no obligation to “save” the Islamic world . . . . We are not all-powerful and are not in the position to help all of the Third World out of poverty, certainly not by allowing all of them to move here. We should take a break from massive immigration, also non-Muslim immigration, for at least a generation, in order to absorb and assimilate the persons we already have in our countries. The West is becoming so overwhelmed by immigration that this may trigger civil wars in several Western nations in the near future. We already have massive Third World ghettos in our major cities. Future immigration needs to be more strictly controlled and ONLY non-Muslim.

This immigration break should be used to demonstrate clearly that the West will no longer serve as the dumping ground for excess population growth in other countries. We have cultures and countries that we’d like to preserve, too, and cannot and should not be expected to accept unlimited number of migrants from other countries. But above all, the West, and indeed the non-Muslim world, should make our countries Islam-unfriendly and implement a policy of containment of Dar al-Islam.

Col. B. Bunny,

I've read aot of Fjordman,s articles and I agree with most of this assessment.

In regards to immigration, I am wholeheartedly for securing our borders and controlling the influx of immigrants. I am not however convinced of this idea that America is NOT a nation of immigrants. This country has a great heritage. And yes, our founding fathers were centuries ahead of their time when they constructed the constitution and the bill of rights.

My big issue here is that I don't care what color you are or where you came from, as long as you assimilate into American society and place America FIRST above all other loyalties, you're welcome here.

I also believe that English should be our state language. If you want to come here learn to speak the language, learn about our history and values, etc.

I suspect if I was not intimately familiar with many people who immigrated here to become Americans, I might have some prjudics as well, but when I see my friends who apply for a visa and after years of waiting finally get one, struggle to learn the language and study America and when that day finally comes when they get to take their test and are sworn in as Americans, to see the unbridled joy at being now a member of the greatest nation on this earth, you can't help but tear up a bit.

I am a part of the American tribe and I am white, but my color is not what makes me an American, it's my conviction to live and upholdthe values and laws of this nation.

You don't have to agree with me, I did my time to protect everyone's right to believe how they want to.

My 2 cents.

Jane, I emailed you. Feel free to republish as Fjordman is fine with people using his stuff if you acknowledge the source.

Mjolnir, I agree there are plenty of people from disparate backgrounds who are thrilled to become citizens. There's a lot of room to be a citizen and still be a part of where one comes from (if foreign born). I agree that such people are welcome here and they are. It's not a color or race issue. I've seen an eloquent plea from a Nigerian woman living in Britain for the British to defend their own heritage. She came back to Britain because she revered that heritage. What can you expect of people like me, she said, if you British won't defend your own ways, or words to that effect.

A big problem arises when we observe that people (hint: Muslims) have come to the U.S. who don't intend to assimilate and for whom citizenship is but a stepping stone to an offensive employment of local legal protections to further a replacement and domination agenda.

I surmise that you have no argument with this tho, if I'm wrong, kindly overlook my presumptuousness.

I do differ on this issue of whether we are a nation of immigrants. I have likened that phrase to a species of brain Novocain that, when detected by the average American eye or ear, causes the resident brain to slip into neutral and the mental accelerator to crash to the floorboard. If that isn't a tangle of metaphors I don't know what is, but with luck you get my point.

Americans of European descent, white Americans, if you'll pardon the expression, have as much right to preserve their relative position in America and are not forbidden to consider to what extent they wish their majority to be diluted, if at all.

For European Americans to have gone from being 87% of the population, in 1963, say, to 67% today is a rather remarkable event that is indicative of a massive influx of Third World/non-whites.

I say again, "massive influx."

For centuries the U.S. was home to English stock and then to European stock, with a broad similarity in cultural background. If the phrase nation of immigrants has any meaning it is that we were for the longest time a "nation of immigrants from Europe."

Even that is beside the point on the "nationofimmigrants" front. The real problem with the phrase is that it is produced from the sleeve as a putative trump card whenever the issues of national origin and rate of influx of immigrants are raised. As we are a nationofimmigrants, the argument goes, it is therefore impermissible, even morally corrupt, for anyone to suggest that we should prefer immigrants from countries in which our own origins are found or that the rate of immigration from anywhere is exceeding the rate at which a healthy and necessary assimilation of newcomers can be accomplished.

I agree that your color is not what makes you an American but I think that it is equally valid to say that if American were to go from 67% white to 33% white you would be living in a vastly different America. It may be that the other 67% would be fully on board with "America the Propositional Nation" concept. Anyone who thinks that would be the case is on pretty flimsy ground though, IMO. The overwhelming weight of culture and language will negate the influence of the once dominant culture that made American what it was at its height. It wasn't generic immigrants who came here and saw the beauty of the Constitution and made America great, it was that a Constitution that could only have come out of an English or European people at the time of its devising set up a government that made America unique and set the stage for her greatness. The unique habits of mind of those people were the fertile ground upon which the seeds of the Framers could be sewn. The Constitution and culture go hand in hand and the relationship between the two is anything but incidental.

Were it otherwise we could FedEx a copy of the Constitution to Baghdad and have an Iraqi version of our great experiment in self governance successfully launched by the weekend.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Col. There is no denying that our constitutuon and forward-thinking, freedom loving anscetors are the product of European culture. So it appears we are in agreement.
And I also am fervently against the Islamification of western civilization.
Thank you for providing such a concise and educated response, it's refreshing.

Thank you for your kind words.

I'd rather be learning about plants or galaxies than fretting over immigration and the Islamic menace. As Fjordman observed, it's a cause for resentment to have to focus one's energies on Islam (which is about as an unlovely and unintriguing subject as I can imagine) but that effort does have the collateral benefit of forcing one to reexamine one's own culture and assumptions. OWTTE.

I too appreciated the tone of your comments over at Gunslinger's Journal.
