George McDonald Fraser (April 2, 1925 – January 2, 2008).

Mr. Fraser was a great soul whose novels taught history through the exploits of British Army Colonel Flashman — lover, lout, master linguist, and coward. Somehow Flashman was there at just about every 19th century battle or calamity, dodging bullets, daggers, and assegais in every place but the Arctic and Lake Woebegone, never really quite sure about the fidelity of his airhead wife.

Mr. Fraser has sadly departed this sounding plain leaving many, many thousands of delighted readers of his books. Below is his "Last Testament," the truth of which will be apparent to all who remember a safer, saner Britain that didn't cringe before barbarians or civil servants.

"The last testament of Flashman's creator: How Britain has destroyed itself." By George Macdonald Fraser, Daily Mail, 1/5/08.
