Win-win with Big Pharm slime.

A month's worth of the branded statin Lipitor costs the [British National Health Service] £24.64 [$49.14], whereas the generic Simvastatin costs 54p [$1.08].
The large pharmaceutical company (Pfizer) that took the risks and invested the money to develop a useful drug to reduce blood cholesterol got to recover its investment, cover losses on other investments (also made to try to benefit mankind), and make a very nice profit. The patent system protected the company's limited privilege to charge what the market would bear (gouging, of course, in the eyes of the left) and now the drug is available through all eternity for 3.6¢ a day. Or at least it's available until the advent of socialism or the North American caliphate, one.

Now, let's have another chorus from the left about the gouging, greedy varlets who own this corner of "Big Pharm." Capitalist slime!
