At some point (which is becoming increasingly clearly denoted), inaction and self-indulgent chardonnay soliloquising actually become cowardly, treasonable and collaborative with the enemy. He's just another traitor who has crossed that line.

The French have trainloads of officials who have excelled at le sellout. It's one thing to screw up and end up with millions of Muslims in your homeland but quite another to convince yourself and your countrymen that it was an act of rare statesmanship and a vindication of the glories of French civilization.
