Pearls of expression – VII.

The face of [Oakland] Mayor Quan, humiliated, baffled, self accusatory, defeated, is the one you see on every Marxist "ideological deviationist" when the mindless fervor of the Left needs a way to explain why the Revolution isn't working out as planned.

One thinks of the humilated thought criminals of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, loyal party members who ended up surrounded by taunting "students" before being sent off to be "re-educated" or liquidated.

My favorite story along these lines is that of Riazonov who founded the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow and collected for the Institute's library every known socialist tract ever published in order finally to define what pure Marxism was about. He spent years on the project tracking down every deviation and ideological misstep. Finally he came to the definitive theory of pure Marxism, which was right before he was shot in the Great Purge for ideological subversion.

He knew everything, and understood nothing.

Shades of modern liberalism. All kinds of mental horsepower and education but none of the sense that the Lord gave a duck.

Western civilization, uniquely evil? Why, yes! Three bags full.

Capitalism, the bastard son of cannibalism? Must be!

Christianity, spawn of Satan? Works for us!

Third-world barbarism? Immigration priority!

Resident African culture of grievance and crime? Melting pot triumph.
