Pearls of expression.

Conscription was the main political crusade of the progressives, who insisted that the poor bedraggled cannon fodder in flyover country be forced into the service of the war god, but as for they themselves – why, they were needed on the home front to direct the war and make sure the peons stayed in line. Thus, [progressive Walter] Lippmann argued – successfully – that he would best serve the cause by working for the War Department. The chickenhawk is not a new species.
