Since the structure of society was, however loosely, patriarchal, maleness was also seen as normative. And of course the same applied to heterosexuality, since most people are heterosexual. The Frankfurt School and its poisonous effluvia are Exhibit A for that, though I don't know if they amounted to an elite. Ditto, the massive over-representation of Jews in communism in the 1930s here and in the ranks of the Bolsheviks and the Cheka shortly before that. There they certainly were the elite.
