Here is an intersting insight into the Byzantine world I'd never encountered. (The Colonel's not few detractors correctly point out that there is much that he has never encountered.)
The Byzantines were not a bunch of rubes by any stretch of the imagination. One of the great tragedies of history was that the Eastern Empire was conquered and subjected to Muslim rule.
