According to a very disturbing February 2006 ICM opinion poll, 40% of British Muslims want Sharia law introduced into parts of the country.That's 40% of the Muslims the British allowed into their country, and they want a legal system that is backward, arbitrary, vicious, and run by uneducated priests . . . unless you consider expertise with home made explosives, land mine warfare, and clandestine communication as something that amounts to an education.
What were these people thinking when they went to Britain? Or, what are they thinking about Britain as the land of their birth? What logical path gets these people from disdaining certain unlovely aspects of Britain to wanting to jettison its great legal tradition in whole or in part? And, in its place, they want something that's best left to govern camel auctions and polygamous marriages.
We were clueless about Islam before 9/11 but where were the people who had studied Islam and knew something about that distorted Muslim mindset? Were they asleep?
The British had best get busy emulating the Australian Peter Costello who minces no words when he invited Muslims who want the sharia to leave Australia and go some place else that follows it.
